Sometimes the KA Camp Cup is filled with tragedy. One such tragedy unfolded tonight on the basketball courts and soccer field, as the heroic Vampire Slayers conquered their rivals the Constructivists, who were previously undefeated in sports. But the tragedy was not the Constructivists' loss, for they already had secured first-place in the regular season and a spot in the finals. The Vampire Slayers needed two wins and at least one Impressionist tie to make the finals. And they picked up their wins. But the Impressionists also won two, making the much-anticipated, but rather anti-climactic match-up between the Red Wedge and the Slayers moot. The game did give the Vampire Slayers the bittersweet distinction of first-place in sports and last-place in Scrabble. The contest with the Red Wedge was a hard-fought drama of epic proportions, with Domene playing Wade and Muzurovic playing Shaq. The Constructivists hustled well but could not stop the dynamic duo.

Compounding upon the Slayers' tragedy was the situation with the Modernist forward Alex Amstrup, who did not show up for the game. Sources report a big falling out between coach Jason Hopper and the star striker. With Amstrup, the Modernists would have had a much better chance at defeating the Impressionists, which would have put the Slayers in the finals. And to add insult to injury, both captains for the Impressionists, Eden Adogla and David Mwaura, played simultaneously. But in the end, the much-needed wins were won, and the Impressionists are in the finals against the Constructivists. The Red Wedge is favored by most bookies 2:1, but stickball is anyone’s game.

SCRABBLE HUSTLE AWARD
The Impressionists & The Cubists for finishing all their Scrabble games

It was Scrabble day today for the KA Camp Cup and what an exciting day it was. To cut to the chase: a lot of upsets, and some seismic shifts in the standings. While the Constructivists have secured the first-place spot, there are three — count ‘em, three — teams still in contention for second place and a chance at the cup.

Scenarios:

> If the Impressionists win both their soccer games, they are in for sure.

> If the Impressionists lose or tie at least one of their games, and the Vampire Slayers win both their games, the Slayers will go to the finals.

> If the Impressionists lose one game and either lose or tie their other, and the Cubists win both their games, the Cubists go on to the finals.

As far as today’s Scrabble games went, Cameron “the beast” Bates led the Impressionists to two big V’s, but they got stuck with a bunch of O’s and U’s in their final game and lost to the Surrealists. The Cubists won three important ones with the wit of Avery “the goose” Silverman. The Constructivists and Slayers both dropped a couple, as their athleticism could not save them from the logomaniacal logic of the Scrabble board. No one really knows what happened with the Post-Impressionists today, because they were too busy whining. Quit whining, Post-Impressionists! And see you all tomorrow for an exciting close to a roller-coaster of a season!

On the basketball courts, the Modernists picked up their first victory-by-hoop as the Post-Impressionists were forced to default on their first game, stuck on the soccer pitch with no plan for returning the athletes to the court. The Cubists picked up a couple wins tonight, evening their record once again at the .500 mark. The vicious triumvirate conquered nearly all the Mediterranean, including the Modernists and the finals-seeking Impressionists, with Alex “cubelicious” Pusey, Avery “the goose” Silverman, and Tyrannosaurus-Rex Chen passing like the Harlem Globetrotters and leading their team to two convincing W’s. Mathieu “swifty” De Langis of the Modernists hit big man Seena Burns down low, but the Mod Squad had two big troubles putting the ball in the basket and keeping the other team off the boards. The Impressionists’ rookies Vince Young and Tzung-Hua Hsieh passed magnificently for their crew, as they have contributed to the Impressionists’ rise in the standings with their increasing and increasingly valuable playing time. But the Picasso Posse emerged as winners in both games, and might look to make a run at the finals if they can finish the season off with a big win streak. The pennant-chasing Impressionists did win one tonight, however, as they trampled the Surrealists in a 14 - 9 victory. Peter Joe and Matthew “fast hands” Decoste were solid as usual.

In soccer, all three matches were nail-biters. In the first contest, the Post-Impressionists — sans captain Doug “Van Gogh” Morrison — held the Constructivists to a 0 – 0 tie through the 23rd minute, but the Red Wedge’s notorious strikers Seung Kim and Pao-Kuan “Paul” Chin opened the flood gates and put together three scores in the final minutes for the shutout victory. Geoffrey Wong had some marvelous saves in the goal box, and Joshua Lee and Timothy So played marvelously in the midfield for the Post-Impressionists. In game two, the Slayers’ Carlos “el diablo” Domene scored quickly in the opening minutes, but Constructivist Kim answered back with an authoritative goal of his own to make it a 1 - 1 tie with the first and second-place teams facing each other on the athletic field for the first time all season. After Chin scored a second, controversial goal (followed by an equally controversial penalty kick), Slayers’ Captain Adi Muzurovic overpowered the Red Wedge and took it all the way for an avenging Vampiric goal. Muzurovic handled the ball beautifully for the Slayers, dribbling and passing all over the field and barely even needing help from talented teammates like Eric Wong, who also had a spectacular game. Constructivist defenders Jamie Hung and Devin Kennedy played with style in holding an explosive Vampire offense to two hard-earned goals from some star players. The score remained 2 – 2 at the whistle, giving the Constructivists their second tie in an otherwise perfect season. In the third game, the Slayers rocked the Surrealists in a 2 - 1 victory in which Muzurovic again dominated. Domene, too, was everywhere, hustling like the champion he his. But with the Slayers victory and tie, as compared to the Impressionists victory and loss, the Michelle Gellars have now moved an extra half game ahead of their third-place rivals in the race for a spot in the finals.

In soccer news, the Impressionists continue to make their push for second place with a convincing 6 - 0 shutout over the Cubists, with Cameron “the beast” Bates scoring four goals, and the ever-dangerous Peter Joe complementing him with the additional two. The teams’ early woes have now dissipated as they continue to crush their opponents on all fields of play. The Impressionists’ victory, however, did not move them any closer to the second-place spot, thanks to the tremendous play from the Vampire Slayers’ striker, Braxton Carr, who scored thrice on the evening and was the day’s MVP. Feeding him, predictably, was Carlos “el diablo” Domene, and the Slayers strolled past the Cubists in a 4 - 2 win. The vicious triumvirate looked strong in both losses—with Alex Pusey playing well up front, Avery “the goose” Silverman making some nice slide tackles, and Rex Chen mounting a solid defense—but the Impressionists and Slayers just had too much on the line tonight to be stopped. Cubists’ captain John Brooks-Jung valiantly laid out for a diving header in his game against the Impressionists, but his jaw promptly met the menacing foot of Matthew “fast hands” Decoste, who sent Brooks-Jung directly to the disabled list. He is doubtful for Monday’s games.

Monsoon rains continue to flood the Scrabble board, as nearly every single team still has make-up games to play. The Post-Impressionists did, however, pick up a much needed victory, and are now looking to overtake the Modernists for sole possession of the fifth-place spot. The Red Wedge also added another tally to the win column by melting the clocks of the Surrealists. Seung Kim continues to make some great combinations along with Ansh Shukla and Pao-Kuan “Paul” Chin. Remember sports fans: with half the games still to be played, it’s still anyone’s cup.

It was a glorious evening for the Post-Impressionists, who picked up their first victory of the cup. And on the basketball court, of all places. They faced the Surrealists, who are really coming into their own now that Kyler Crawford has hit his stride as a power forward. Crawford rebounded well, and has really become a force under the basket, both offensively and defensively. Sundeep Kakarlapudi passed the ball well tonight, hitting shooting guard Gregory Owen for a couple assists. Chris Choo got some big offensive boards for the Surrealists and scored well, and Eric “baby face” Lin forced several turnovers. But the Surrealists could not overcome the Post-Impressionists, who were bent on adding their first tally to the win column. Jeongho Joo played tough defense, and big men Geoffrey Wong and Joshua Lee scored consistently for the Toulous-Lautrec-ers. Thomas Choi registered a couple buckets, Timothy So hustled hard and got hit for some key passes on fast breaks, and the girls made some contributions other than their high-pitched and deafening shrieks.

The Scrabble boards were quiet tonight, with two of the games delayed until tomorrow because of rain. The Impressionists registered the high-score of all the matches in their battle with the once-tough Modernists, who dropped another and are sliding further back in the standings. The Post-Impressionists couldn’t quite make it a two-victory night in their bout with the Cubists, who look quite strong on the Scrabble board and will probably make a push for the finals as they are only two games out of second place. And in the first showdown between the Constructivists and the Vampire Slayers — the league’s top two teams — the Red Wedge stuck a wooden stake into the hearts of their foes and handed them their third loss in a row. The race for second place and a spot in the finals is now closer than ever before.

The Modernists turned Hegel on his head and slew the undefeated Slayers on the soccer pitch tonight, making those menacing Marxists the Constructivists the only remaining undefeated team. The Mod Squad could not, however, defeat the Red Wedge, but did elicit great play from striker Arjan Saraon, as well as the always-impressive Alex Amstrup, who had multiple scores on the evening. Derek “bam-bam” Nielsen of the Impressionists had a tremendous chance to score which missed by inches on a beautiful header in the their tie with the Red Wedge, the first time any team has kept the Constructivists from victory. The Impressionists are now looking to overtake the sliding Vampire Slayers for the second place spot.

Scrabble looks to be the real x-factor for the KA Camp Cup. Tonight, the Cubists opened with ZEBRA, a 52-pointer, in their win over the much maligned Surrealist outfit, but in their second match against the Impressionists, they did not fair as well. Cameron “Pissaro” Bates dropped some serious bombs on the Scrabble board in both games, using all seven letters and gaining the coveted 50-point bonus on the second turn for the Impressionists in their victory over the Cubists. The word: DISTEND, played off a word ending in E to make ED as well. The Vampire Slayers, after taking their tough loss in soccer, came into the Scrabble lounge looking to turn things around. But even with the fierce efforts of Carlos “el diablo” Domene — who rocked the board much like he has rocked the court and the pitch throughout the cup — the Slayers fell once again as Bates conjured up his second 50-point bonus for the victory. Also, some of the girls played well too.

Some intense games unfolded on the KA courts tonight. The big story was Nick Metcalfe and the Constructivists, who strolled to an easy 21 - 6 victory over the Modernists in their second game, Metcalfe scoring 13 times, and every player registering points and assists (except captain Jamie Poskin, who sat the entire game). Chunsun Baak made baskets, steals, and rebounds like a pro tonight for the Modernists, but the team — drafted for their speed and soccer skills — lacked the height to win their first basketball game. The Cubists’ Rex Chen played like a champion, as did his threatening teammates Avery “the goose” Silverman and Alex Pusey. But the vicious triumvirate couldn’t squeak a victory out of the still-undefeated Constructivists, even with the added tough play of Kevin “money train” Tang and Chandler Davis-Phelps. Gregory Owen of the Surrealists hit some nice shots from outside, and Kyler Crawford played the post like a mixed-breed of Dennis Rodman and Hakeem Olajuwon. The Cubists and Surrealists’ game went down to the wire, ending at a tie in overtime and with a bunch of sweaty counselors and ballers.

And on the pitch, Kristie Girl and Joshua Lee of the Post-Impressionists had strong showings, and Timothy So blocked a zillion goals, but it wasn’t enough to conquer their rivals, the Impressionists, or the league-leading Vampire Slayers. Cameron Bates and Peter Joe had solid games for the Impressionists, who picked up a win and a loss on the evening. Carlos Domene ended the controversy over his penalty kick against the Post-Impressionists by scoring an authoritative goal in the final minutes to give the Vampire Slayers a 3 - 1 victory. Braxton Carr scored a goal and then took a hard foul in the box, showing the highs and lows of the wonderful game of soccer. And Calvin “forced field” Chang saved a goal and the Vampire Slayers from their first loss by stealing the ball from a Post-Impressionist striker in the twentieth minute near the goal. An exciting day all around for the KA Camp Cup.

The basketball courts were alive with a couple close games this evening. The Impressionists, rebounding strongly off their opening two losses, came out and won two tonight, with Matthew “fast hands” Decoste passing well to the post, and the ever-dangerous Peter Joe handling his business. Cameron Bates contributed in a big way to give the Impressionists the edge they needed to win two close ones. Danielle Girl of the Modernists had some Stockton-like moments as she dished off to big men Joshua Lee and Geoffrey Wong, who scored well for the mod squad but couldn’t quite make a final push to victory in either game. The Vampire Slayers overcame some terrifying shrieking and monstrous screaming from a newly made-over Post-Impressionists outfit. Carlos “el diablo” Domene scored, passed, and broke ankles at will once again, driving through the lane with impunity. The Slayers are now 4 and 0.

On the pitch, the offensive cannons were firing. After nearly having to forfeit their first game for arriving late, the Surrealists came through and scored three goals against the undefeated Constructivists, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Red Wedge, who had four different players score in their first game for a 6 - 3 win. The Surrealists’ Isabel Monahan — hailing from the vaunted halls of Jerry — used her incredible ball-handling abilities to lead her crew. Nearly everyone she challenged fell flat on their face after she deployed her wicked moves, including team-captain Jamie Poskin. The Cubists picked up their first win as well as their first loss tonight — getting strong play again from the vicious triumvirate: Avery “the goose” Silverman, Rex Chen, and Alex Pusey. Tomorrow’s match-ups look promising, and remember: it’s a knock-out!

In basketball news, the Vampire Slayers and Constructivists got off to great starts, winning their first two by large margins. The infamous “Red Wedge” looked impenetrable, with Nick Metcalfe hitting outside shots consistently, Ansh Shukla (the day’s MVP) playing tough defense and scoring big underneath, and Seung Kim and Pao-Kuan “Paul” Chin making dozens of steals and lighting it up on fast breaks. Carlos Domene led the Vampire Slayers to two easy victories with his wizard-like passing, omniscient court vision, and utterly disruptive defense. Peter Joe of the Impressionists provides a glimmer of hope for a talented but under-coached team. And Neville Eclav’s Surrealists may have their work cut out for them on the basketball court, but should be feared on the soccer pitch and possibly on the Scrabble board as well.

On the soccer side of the evening, there were a few exciting and close matches. The Cubists were the big surprise — tying the tough-to-beat Modernists and Post-Impressionists with their tremendous speed up front from Rex Chen (the day’s hustler), Avery “the goose” Silverman, and Alex Pusey. The Modernists’ Arjan Saraon had a couple brilliant games and Jason “Mondrian” Hopper’s squad looks to be an intimidating force for the remainder of the cup.
